Set along the Ohio River, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center shares stories of courage, resistance and the pursuit of freedom. Its exhibits connect the history of the Underground Railroad and the struggle to abolish enslavement with broader conversations about equality and human rights.

Across the museum, visitors encounter powerful spaces including the Slave Pen, From Slavery to Freedom, The Struggle Today, The Hall of Everyday Freedom Heroes and Brothers of the Borderland. Historical settings, interpretive exhibits and carefully crafted environments give these stories a physical presence, creating space for both discovery and reflection.

Nassal fabricated and installed a wide range of elements that shaped the museum experience, from custom dioramas and period façades to carved stucco, scenic rockwork, faux trees, exhibit platforms, kiosks and specialty props. Fiber-optic lighting, reader rails and other interpretive components further supported the storytelling throughout the galleries.

Rather than separating history from the present, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center creates a continuing dialogue about what freedom means. Through immersive environments and meaningful storytelling, visitors are invited to consider the individuals who fought for change, the resilience behind their stories and the enduring importance of courage, cooperation and perseverance.
