For Houston Zoo: Gorillas of the African Forest, Nassal delivered custom habitat theming, structural scenic elements and specialty rockwork that help recreate the dense landscapes of Central Africa. The exhibit was designed to support natural animal behaviors while creating opportunities for guests to experience wildlife within an immersive environment inspired by the Congo Basin.

A defining feature of the project is a series of massive deadfall trees sculpted in shotcrete and reinforced with structural steel. These elevated crossings span a muddy ravine occupied by Red River Hogs, allowing gorillas to travel throughout the habitat while providing enrichment and visual interest. Nassal also fabricated shotcrete mud bank walls, dramatic rock faces, cascading waterfalls, artificial trees and realistic vine systems that establish the layered character of the exhibit.

The project required scenic elements that could withstand daily use while supporting the needs of the animals. Interior and exterior habitat features were carefully integrated to provide climbing opportunities, encourage exploration and create natural transitions between animal spaces. Hemp vine features and custom scenic detailing further enhance the realism of the environment while contributing to habitat functionality.

Guests enter the experience through an African village-inspired setting that serves as the gateway to a broader journey through the African Forest. As visitors move deeper into the exhibit, they encounter gorillas alongside other species native to the region, including chimpanzees, white rhinos, kudu, antelope, ostriches, giraffes and cheetahs. By combining habitat engineering with immersive scenic construction, Nassal helped create an environment that supports animal welfare, strengthens educational storytelling and offers a compelling look into one of the world's most diverse ecosystems.
