Africa Live! Phase II was designed as an immersive journey through the varied landscapes of Africa, where guests encounter wildlife within environments inspired by the continent’s rivers, wetlands and rocky savannas. Nassal's scope focused on creating the naturalistic habitat features and scenic elements that establish the exhibit’s sense of place while supporting animal care, guest circulation and educational experiences.

The project included the fabrication and installation of extensive custom rockwork throughout the attraction. Mud banks, habitat rockwork, expansive kopje formations and a large walk-through termite mound were carefully constructed to recreate recognizable African landforms while providing functional environments for colobus monkeys, rock hyraxes, African wild dogs and other resident species. Each feature was designed to integrate seamlessly into the surrounding habitat and support long-term durability within an active zoological setting.

Visitors begin their journey in a free-flight aviary, where a stream flows through sculpted shotcrete rockwork and lush vegetation before cascading over a themed waterfall. As guests move deeper into the exhibit, the terrain shifts from fractured rock formations to larger savanna-inspired landscapes that frame animal viewing opportunities from multiple vantage points. Elevated pathways and gathering spaces provide changing perspectives throughout the experience while encouraging exploration of the exhibit's diverse environments.

One of the attraction’s defining features is the immersive termite mound, which allows guests to step inside a recreation of one of Africa’s most iconic natural structures and look directly into the African wild dog habitat. By combining realistic habitat design with opportunities for discovery, Africa Live! Phase II creates an experience that feels connected to both the animals and the landscapes they inhabit, allowing visitors to better understand the ecosystems that support Africa’s remarkable wildlife.
